House Music

House music is a very popular form on dance music that first originated in the mid eighties. House music is thought to be strongly influenced by some types of 70’s disco music, particularly the drum patterns used in house music, which frequently feature a kick drum hit on every beat in a bar. This type of beat was very popular in disco music, so the influence is thought to be quite prominent by many. Synthesised bass lines feature heavily in house music and it is quite common to sample recognisable melodies or riffs from pop music. House music can often have no vocals, although it is not uncommon to hear house music tracks with sampled vocals, again often sampled from pop songs, however sometimes dialogue from films is sampled.

House music gained had its origins in early eighties New York clubs, however it gained a significant amount of popularity in the UK during the late eighties and early nineties. It has maintained this high level of popularity to this day and there are a number of nightclubs around the world, but especially in the UK that exclusively play house music.

The early hey day of house music in the UK is frequently referred to as the ‘second summer of love’ and the yellow smiley face logo is associated with the rise of house music in the UK by many people. This period is also associated with the use of the drug ecstasy which was very popular with some fans of house music around this time.
